IMPULSE BLACK

SITE SPECIFIC INSTALLATION

MIXED MEDIA

A completely dark room, filled with the persistent sound of an untuned radio, is briefly illuminated by the alternating flash of a light. In the moments of visibility, the dark shapes of different objects take form, and are immediately absorbed again by the darkness. A cabinet, a chair, a table, a window, books, dishes, a bottle, a shoe, a passport, all completely black, recreate an environment, the staging of a living space recently abandoned by its inhabitants. The flashing light never manages to clearly distinguish the anatomy of the objects from the darkness to which they belong. With this installation, realized for the "Museum of Modern Art" in Odessa, Piccini continues his research on the expressive meanings of the symbols and their respective effects, referring both to the perception of reality and to the imaginative properties of the human psyche. The strong effect of the color black is psychologically based on the experience of darkening, the night and the associated extinction of all colors. Black is the color of death, of dark secrets; it expresses the idea of nothingness, deprivation and at the same time, the opposite notion of primordial chaos that can contain every kind of imaginable possibility. The characteristics, related to the psychological perception of this non-color, are used in this installation to disorient the viewers and to influence their perception through a blurred and undefined representation of an alternative, parallel dark reality.
