Two figures move through the city: one behind and the other in front of the camera, engrossed in a dialogue about their own identity. Together, they engage in an investigation, a social experiment that seeks an authentic expression in the medium of film, which always fails because of its own conditions. People are questioned, places inspected, personal motives examined in search of knowledge in exchange and in confrontation with the situational other. "Rollenspiele" is a film about filmmaking: in front of the blue screen of a classic "homestory" the fragmented portrait of an unspecified artist develops slowly, but only a thin membrane lies between "real" and "fake". Unannounced, the film jumps from spontaneous expression to filmic setting, citing the history of film, playing with the clichés learned. Repeatedly the expedition starts to roll, detaching single layers from the picture, and exposing the view of a blank canvas.
